On May 18, 1860, Abraham Lincoln wins the Republican Party presidential nomination on third ballot over William H. Seward, who later becomes Lincoln’s Secretary of State. As 16th President, Lincoln leads country through Civil War, ends slavery and promotes economic modernization. In the general election, he defeats Stephen A. Douglas.
