On September 3, 1777, the Stars and Stripes fly for the first time during a Revolutionary War battle at Cooch's Bridge, Maryland. Based on a resolution passed by the Continental Congress a few months prior, the flag sports alternating red and white stripes with thirteen stars representing the colonies.
